Orlando Pirates continued their impressive start to the Betway Premiership season, securing a convincing 3-0 win against Polokwane City at a packed Orlando Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Buccaneers’ dominance was evident throughout the match, with Monnapule Saleng breaking the deadlock in the second half, followed by a brace from substitute Evidence Makgopa.

Pirates vs Polokwane City: Early Stalemate

The first half was characterized by Pirates’ control of possession, but they struggled to find a way past Polokwane’s resolute defense. The visitors, meanwhile, focused on maintaining a compact shape and utilizing the pace of Oswin Appollis on the counterattack.

    Second Half Onslaught

However, the second half saw a reinvigorated Pirates side. In the 54th minute, Saleng received a well-placed pass from Relebohile Mofokeng and slotted the ball past Polokwane goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga to open the scoring.

The goal seemed to unlock the Buccaneers’ attack. In the 86th minute, Karim Kimvuidi’s shot was parried into the path of Evidence Makgopa, who made no mistake in doubling Pirates’ lead. The Polokwane defense, rattled by the second goal, conceded again in stoppage time. Raymond Daniels’ misplaced back pass was pounced upon by Makgopa, who calmly completed his brace and sealed a comfortable 3-0 victory for the home side.

    League Implications

This win sees Orlando Pirates climb to the top of the league standings, having collected six points from their first two matches. Polokwane City, despite their early season promise, now sit in third place after suffering their first league defeat.

Orlando Pirates: Next Betway Premiership Match

Orlando Pirates will now travel to KwaZulu-Natal to face Richards Bay on Sunday, while Polokwane City will look to bounce back when they host another challenging opponent.
