Following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Stellenbosch FC in their Betway Premiership match at Athlone Stadium, Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler expressed concern over the mental resilience and drive within his team. Despite competing strongly initially, City faltered after conceding critical goals at pivotal moments, leading Tinkler to question his players’ resolve.

    The Turning Point

The match shifted dramatically after City conceded just before half-time. While they had been performing well, the situation worsened with Fawaaz Basadien’s remarkable long-range goal shortly after the break. Tinkler lamented, “It’s almost like the boys dropped their heads and didn’t believe any more they could get themselves back into the game.” This loss of belief underscored a vital aspect of sport—resilience. For Tinkler, maintaining determination and composure in adversity is crucial for success.

Eric Tinkler: A Call for Fight

Tinkler’s disappointment stemmed not just from the scoreline but from the evident lack of fight in his players. “After the second goal, the fight wasn’t there anymore. That can’t happen. We have to continue fighting irrespective of what’s happening,” he asserted. His call to arms highlights the need for a stronger mental approach alongside technical skills.

    Learning from Adversity

Despite the defeat, Tinkler noted that his team showed promise, feeling they were “a little bit unlucky to come in at half-time 1-0 down.” This perspective reflects his hope that his players can capitalize on their abilities while cultivating a more robust mindset. The coach emphasized the need for improved decision-making and ball control, reminding his team that focus should not waver, even under pressure. “You can’t give up at that stage of the game,” he declared.

    Moving Forward

In the wake of this loss, Tinkler’s hope extends beyond tactical adjustments to fostering a culture of perseverance within his squad. The challenge now lies in rallying his players to believe in their capabilities and respond positively to setbacks. As they prepare for future matches, the lessons learned from this defeat will be crucial in shaping the character and performance of the team.

Ultimately, Tinkler aims to guide Cape Town City back to winning ways by instilling a resilient spirit that can withstand the challenges of competitive football.
