Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed the signing of talented striker Iqraam Rayners from Stellenbosch FC. The 27-year-old has penned a deal with the reigning premiership champions (previously known as the DStv Premiership), adding further firepower to their already formidable attacking lineup.

Iqraam Rayners Joins Sundowns: A Proven Goalscorer

Rayners has established himself as one of the most prolific forwards in South African football in recent seasons. He had an impressive 2023/24 season where he spearheaded the Stellies for CAF Champions League qualification. He ended the season with an impressive 15 goals, earning him a spot in the national team, Bafana Bafana. Notably, he scored five goals in a single league match against Polokwane City, a rare feat achieved by only one other player in the history of the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

He enjoyed a successful spell at Stellenbosch, consistently finding the back of the net and earning a reputation for his clinical finishing and intelligent movement.

    Strengthening Sundowns’ Attack

The acquisition of Rayners further strengthens Sundowns’ attacking options. The Brazilians already boast a wealth of talent in their forward line, including the likes of Peter Shalulil and Thapelo Morena. Rayners’ arrival will provide healthy competition for places and ensure that Sundowns maintain their attacking prowess. His exceptional performance last season has persuaded Sundowns that he is the ideal player to guide the club to even greater success in the upcoming season. The club’s head coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, firmly believes this.

“We are happy to have him (Rayners) because he will add something to the club,” Mngqithi said after the 28-year-old signing was completed.

“I’m looking at him more for the Champions League than the PSL. As much as he is going to help us in the PSL, I think in the Champions League that’s where he will really give us something.”

    Mamelodi Sundowns’ Ambitions

Mamelodi Sundowns are known for their ambitious approach to the transfer market, and the signing of Rayners is a further indication of their desire to remain at the top of South African football. The club will be aiming to defend their premiership title (now known as Betway Premiership) and make a strong impression in the CAF Champions League.

The signing of Iqraam Rayners is a significant coup for Mamelodi Sundowns. The striker’s goalscoring ability and experience will be a valuable asset to the team as they look to achieve their ambitious goals. Rayners’ arrival is sure to excite the Sundowns faithful, who will be eager to see him in action in the famous yellow jersey.
