Manchester United’s shaky start to the 2024/25 season has once again raised doubts about their ability to compete for major honours. Under Erik ten Hag, the team has shown moments of quality but is consistently undermined by costly mistakes and a lack of finishing power. Their recent 1-1 Europa League draw with FC Twente highlighted these issues, as a second-half error from Christian Eriksen allowed Twente to equalize despite United leading at halftime.

    Eriksen’s Error and Collective Responsibility

Eriksen’s decision to take a risky turn under pressure led to Sam Lammers stealing the ball and scoring. While the mistake was pivotal, Erik ten Hag emphasized that the entire team was at fault for allowing Twente to stay in the game. The failure to secure a second goal left them vulnerable, and they ultimately paid for their lack of killer instinct.

    Domestic Inconsistency and Missed Opportunities

United’s struggles aren’t confined to Europe. Domestically, their inconsistency has also been apparent, as seen in their recent goalless draw with Crystal Palace. While they have a talented squad on paper, frequent lapses in concentration and a failure to capitalize on strong positions have become all too common. Ten Hag himself acknowledged that the team needs to push harder for the second goal to ensure control of matches, a mentality they’ve been unable to sustain.

Manchester United: Lacking Desire and Hunger

Eriksen’s post-match comments were equally revealing, as he noted the team seemed to lack desire compared to Twente, who “wanted it more.” This lack of hunger is a worrying sign for United, a club with title ambitions. For them to be genuine contenders, they must not only show consistency but also the drive to outperform their opponents across 90 minutes.

Conclusion: United’s Title Hopes in Jeopardy

United’s title hopes now rest on whether they can shake off this tendency to drop points. Their inability to finish games strongly could see them fall behind early in the Premier League race. The upcoming clash with Tottenham presents an opportunity to turn things around, but the team’s inconsistency remains a significant obstacle.

In conclusion, Manchester United’s recurring errors and mental lapses are hampering their potential. If they are to challenge for the Premier League title, they must develop a more ruthless edge and show greater collective determination, or risk seeing their ambitions unravel once again.
