Orlando Pirates secured a vital 2-0 victory over Botswana champions Jwaneng Galaxy in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie at the National Stadium in Gaborone on Saturday. The win puts the Buccaneers in a strong position heading into the second leg next weekend.

Tshegofatso Mabasa opened the scoring for Pirates in first-half stoppage time, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Galaxy. Deon Hotto doubled the lead in the 77th minute with a powerful shot, securing a comfortable advantage for the visitors.

The victory is a significant boost for Pirates, who were eliminated by Jwaneng at the same stage of the competition last season. The Buccaneers side will now be confident of progressing to the group stages.

Orlando Pirates vs Jwaneng: Key Points

    • Orlando Pirates defeated Jwaneng Galaxy 2-0 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie.
    • Tshegofatso Mabasa and Deon Hotto scored the goals for Pirates.
    • The victory puts Pirates in a strong position heading into the second leg.
    • The second leg will be played next weekend in South Africa.

    Analysis:

Pirates were the better team throughout the match and deservedly took the lead through Mabasa’s goal just before halftime. Galaxy struggled to create clear-cut chances and were punished for their defensive errors. Hotto’s goal in the second half sealed the victory for Pirates and gave them a two-goal cushion heading into the second leg.

The win is a major boost for Pirates’ confidence and will give them a psychological advantage over Galaxy in the second leg. The Soweto giants will now be favourites to progress to the competition’s group stages.

    Looking Ahead:

Pirates will host Galaxy in the second leg next weekend. The Buccaneers will be confident of securing their place in the group stages, but they will need to be wary of a Galaxy side that will be desperate to overturn the deficit.

Overall, it was a positive performance from Pirates, who will be pleased with their two-goal advantage heading into the second leg. The South African side will now be looking to finish the job next weekend and secure their place in the CAF Champions League group stages.
