Orlando Pirates have officially unveiled Sipho Mbule as their first signing ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, delivering on the wish of newly appointed head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The 27-year-old midfielder, a free agent since departing Mamelodi Sundowns, now joins the Buccaneers after a season-long loan at Sekhukhune United.

Mbule’s acquisition was announced on Tuesday across Pirates’ digital platforms, although the club chose not to reveal the length or terms of his deal. His signing marks the first major move in what is expected to be a busy transfer window for the Soweto giants, especially as Ouaddou looks to put his stamp on the squad.

Sipho Mbule: Career Reboot After Setbacks

Having initially made his name at SuperSport United, Mbule’s move to Sundowns in 2022 came with high expectations. However, his time with the Tshwane club was hampered by limited game time and off-field controversies. While his loan stint at Sekhukhune United showed glimpses of his immense talent, recurring behavioural concerns led Sundowns to reportedly forgo the option of extending his contract.

Despite this, Mbule remains a player of significant ability—something Ouaddou clearly recognises.

    Abdeslam Ouaddou’s Open Admiration

New Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has not hidden his admiration for Mbule. In a recent radio interview, the Moroccan tactician spoke candidly about the midfielder, saying, “Mbule is a fantastic player. He is the kind of player I would like to have in my team.”

Ouaddou emphasised that what Mbule needs is proper guidance. “It’s a question of management. These players need someone close to them to help them realise their potential while keeping their lifestyle in check,” he said.

The Moroccan’s track record of mentoring players and building unity within squads seems to have convinced the Pirates hierarchy to back his judgement. Mbule’s signing could, therefore, be a calculated gamble aimed at unlocking the player’s full potential under a watchful and supportive coach.

A Move That Caught Fans Off Guard

Mbule’s switch to Pirates has generated considerable buzz on social media, with many Kaizer Chiefs supporters expressing their disappointment after the player had previously been linked with a move to Naturena. His agent had even confirmed that Chiefs were offered the chance to sign the player.

But behind the scenes, Pirates moved quickly and quietly, pulling off the transfer with minimal speculation. The deal follows another under-the-radar move: the appointment of Ouaddou as head coach just 24 hours earlier.

The ‘Master Chef’ Ready for Europe

Nicknamed the ‘Master Chef’, Mbule is now expected to join his new teammates for a pre-season tour of Europe next month. The Buccaneers will face the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Pafos FC, Las Palmas, and Granada between 11 and 19 July.

The tour will offer Mbule a platform to integrate into the squad and impress his new coach in competitive conditions. It will also give Ouaddou a clearer picture of how best to utilise the midfielder’s creativity in the heart of the park.

A Second Chance for a Star Once Written Off

Mbule’s story has been one of highs and lows—brilliant performances occasionally overshadowed by questions around discipline and professionalism. However, his move to Pirates could mark a new chapter. With the backing of a coach who believes in his ability and a team preparing for continental and domestic challenges, the midfielder has a golden opportunity to rewrite the narrative.

If he buys into Ouaddou’s vision and maintains his focus, Sipho Mbule could well become one of the signings of the season and a key figure in the Buccaneers’ pursuit of silverware.
