The fierce rivalry between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs has once again extended into the transfer market. This time, it appears the Buccaneers have the upper hand, with sources revealing they are on the verge of securing the signature of a rising talent long-linked with both Soweto giants.
Soweto Rivals Tussle Over Emerging Talent
As is tradition during the off-season, Pirates and Chiefs find themselves circling the same pool of talent. Over the past two transfer windows, both clubs have shown interest in several standout performers, including Oswin Appollis and Thabang Matuludi from Polokwane City, Chippa United’s Sinoxolo Kwayiba, and Fawaaz Basadien—also being pursued by Mamelodi Sundowns. Another name that has recently drawn joint interest is Masindi Nemtajela of Marumo Gallants.
While Chiefs were believed to be aggressively pursuing Nemtajela, reports now suggest that Pirates have swooped in ahead of their rivals to finalise the deal.
Buccaneers Seal the Deal for Nemtajela
According to Soccer-Laduma, Pirates have secured a long-term agreement with Nemtajela, believed to be a three-year contract running from July 2025 to June 2028. The talented midfielder is reportedly set to join the team during their pre-season camp, and insiders suggest that the decision to sign him came following strong recommendations from the club’s scouting department.
“The decision was more about the qualities he offers than who the head coach will be,” said a source familiar with the deal. “He brings something different to Pirates’ midfield, which made him a standout option.”
A Strategic Midfield Reshuffle at Orlando Pirates
Nemtajela’s acquisition is expected to be part of a broader midfield overhaul at the club. The Soweto side has already parted ways with experienced midfielder Miguel Timm and confirmed the signing of Kwayiba. Now, it appears Nemtajela will slot in as a like-for-like replacement for Timm, potentially taking over his role in the engine room.
“The scouts specifically looked for someone who could fill Timm’s shoes, and Nemtajela was seen as the perfect fit,” added another source. “With the deal wrapped up, Pirates are now set in that area for the next few seasons.”
Rising Star with Soweto Roots
Hailing from Soweto, Nemtajela began his rise with Marumo Gallants, joining the club during their stint in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. He quickly became a mainstay in their squad, making consistent appearances during their promotion push and maintaining his form in the Betway Premiership.
His rapid development and strong performances did not go unnoticed, and both Chiefs and Pirates were said to be monitoring him closely. However, it is the Buccaneers who seem to have secured his services in what could prove to be one of the most significant signings of the window.
A Big Statement from the Sea Robbers
While official confirmation from either club remains pending, the move speaks volumes about Pirates’ intentions for the upcoming season. Following a year of fluctuating form and key departures, the club appears determined to reinforce its squad with youthful, dynamic talent capable of elevating their game.
This decisive transfer is also a statement to their rivals. Beating Chiefs to the punch not only boosts Pirates’ squad depth but also underlines their strategic strength in the market. Nemtajela’s ‘unique profile’, as described by insiders, could bring a new edge to Pirates’ midfield, especially as the club looks to transition into a new playing identity ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
