    The South African rugby fraternity gathered for a night of celebration at the 2023 SA Rugby Awards, recognizing the outstanding achievements of players, coaches, and teams throughout the season. The ceremony, held in Johannesburg, saw some familiar faces take centre stage alongside rising stars of the sport.

    Eben Etzebeth Makes History with Back-to-Back Wins During SA Rugby Awards

    The most decorated award of the evening, the SA Rugby Men’s Player of the Year, went to the formidable Eben Etzebeth. The Springbok lock secured this prestigious title for the second consecutive year, etching his name even deeper in South African rugby history. Etzebeth’s exceptional performance throughout the season solidified his position as a vital force on the field.

    He faced stiff competition from fellow Springboks Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi, Frans Malherbe, and Damian Willemse, all nominated for their stellar contributions. However, Etzebeth’s consistency and dominance throughout the year ultimately swayed the votes.

    Libbie Janse van Rensburg Takes Centre Stage in Women’s Rugby

    The Springbok Women’s Player of the Year award found a worthy recipient in Libbie Janse van Rensburg. Her dedication and impactful performances throughout the season earned her the coveted title. Janse van Rensburg emerged victorious over fellow nominees Aseza Hele, Babalwa Latsha, Rights Mkhari, and Nadine Roos, all phenomenal players.

    Young Guns Shine Bright: Canan Moodie Doubles Down on Young Player Award

    The future of South African rugby glistened brightly with the recognition of the SA Rugby Young Player of the Year. Springbok wing Canan Moodie, showcasing remarkable talent and maturity beyond his years, secured this award for the second year running. Moodie’s impressive displays with both the Springboks and the Vodacom Bulls solidified his position as a rising star to watch.

    Celebrating Excellence Across the Rugby Landscape

    Beyond the individual accolades, the SA Rugby Awards honoured exceptional achievements in various categories. The Springboks, following their triumphant Rugby World Cup victory, were rightfully named Team of the Year. Jacques Nienaber, the mastermind behind the Springboks’ success, received the Coach of the Year award.

    The Currie Cup competitions also saw their champions acknowledged. Ruan Pienaar of the Toyota Cheetahs was crowned Currie Cup Premier Division Player of the Year, while Cameron Hufke of the Boland Kavaliers took home the Currie Cup First Division Player of the Year award.
