In a surprising turn of events, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has made the bold decision to leave out key players Khuliso Mudau and Teboho Mokoena from the matchday squad for the highly anticipated Tshwane Derby against SuperSport United on Tuesday, 17 September 2024.

Mngqithi Excludes Key Players for Tshwane Derby

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has made the bold decision to exclude key players Khuliso Mudau and Teboho Mokoena from the matchday squad for the highly anticipated Tshwane Derby. Sundowns kick off their Betway Premiership title defence against city rivals SuperSport United at Loftus Stadium tonight, and the omission of Mudau and Mokoena is a notable decision by the technical team.

    No Injuries Behind Their Absence

According to sources, the two players are not sidelined due to injuries, but rather they haven’t been selected for this match. This decision follows Mngqithi’s comments after their 4-0 CAF Champions League victory over Mbabane Swallows, where Mudau and Mokoena were also absent.

    Mngqithi’s Focus on Squad Competition

Speaking after the weekend win, Mngqithi emphasized the importance of competition within the squad to prevent complacency. “At Sundowns, the biggest advantage is competition. If you think you can play whenever you want, you’ll face challenges,” he stated. “There’s always someone waiting for a chance to step up, and it’s hard to replace a player who’s performing well while the team is winning.”

SuperSport United will undoubtedly see this as an opportunity to exploit any potential weaknesses in the Sundowns lineup. The absence of Mudau and Mokoena could disrupt the team’s rhythm and create openings for Matsatsantsa to capitalize on.

Sundowns vs SuperSport: Message to Underperforming Stars

Mngqithi, who recently replaced Rulani Mokwena, appeared to send a clear message to players whose performance may have dipped under the new leadership at Chloorkop. Following Sundowns’ recent exit from the MTN8, the coach also hinted that some of the club’s star players had fallen short of expectations.

Both Mudau and Mokoena have been integral parts of Sundowns’ success in recent seasons. Mudau, a dynamic right-back known for his attacking prowess, has consistently provided width and creativity down the flank. Mokoena, a versatile midfielder with an eye for goal, has been a driving force in the middle of the park. Their absence will undoubtedly be felt by the Brazilians.
