Thembinkosi Lorch’s resurgence at Wydad Casablanca has sparked a flurry of international interest, with clubs from Europe and the Middle East reportedly eyeing the South African winger following his standout performances at the FIFA Club World Cup. As his loan from Mamelodi Sundowns nears its conclusion, Wydad face a race against time to secure his services permanently.

No Buyout Clause, Big Headache for Wydad

Lorch’s loan spell in Morocco officially ends on 31 July 2025. However, Wydad find themselves in a difficult position, as the agreement does not include a purchase option. This has left the Moroccan giants scrambling to negotiate with Sundowns, who currently hold full ownership of the 31-year-old’s contract. Unlike Sundowns’ previous loan dealings—such as with Cassius Mailula, whose temporary move included a clause for a permanent switch—Lorch’s case gives his parent club full negotiating power.

Club World Cup Spotlight Elevates Thembinkosi Lorch’s Value

The Bloemfontein-born attacker stole the headlines during the Club World Cup, most notably with a superb chipped goal against Italian giants Juventus. He also delivered a strong showing against Manchester City, with his Transfermarkt profile becoming the most viewed after the tournament, highlighting the buzz around him.

His stats from the Juventus clash told the story: 100% dribble success, five duels won, 40 touches, and seven inside the opposition’s box. That level of impact hasn’t gone unnoticed, with scouts and clubs from abroad reportedly monitoring the situation closely.

    Wydad Keen, But Talks Stalling

According to insiders at Wydad, discussions with Sundowns are ongoing but far from straightforward. Head coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem is said to be pushing for Lorch to remain, impressed by the freedom and creativity the player has brought to the squad. However, with no automatic route to retain him, Wydad’s board are directly involved in talks in a bid to avoid losing him to a higher bidder.

Reports from Moroccan media suggest Wydad fear they will lose out as the Club World Cup exposure boosts Lorch’s stock. The club are currently undergoing a major transition and view Lorch as central to their project, especially after clinching CAF competition qualification for the next campaign.

    Sundowns Hold the Cards

Back home, Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly weighing their options. Lorch’s form has erased doubts from his latter days at Orlando Pirates and his slow start at Chloorkop. While Sundowns could look to reintegrate him, the prospect of cashing in on rising international interest may prove tempting.

The timing of this situation adds pressure on both clubs. Wydad’s early elimination from the Club World Cup hasn’t dampened their admiration for Lorch, and sources suggest they are desperate to resolve his future before rival clubs make formal offers.

Momentum Building for a Big Move

At 31, Lorch seems to have found a new lease on life. His performances in Morocco have revived his reputation and opened the door to a potential move abroad. Whether Wydad succeed in tying him down or Sundowns decide to sell to the highest bidder remains to be seen—but one thing is clear: Thembinkosi Lorch is once again one of the hottest names in African football.
