    • Nedbank Cup: Who are the Biggest Achievers in Terms of Titles
    • Number of Nedbank Cup Wins:

The Nedbank Cup is one of the most sought-after titles in the South African Premier Soccer League, let’s look at the teams that boast the most wins. With this season’s edition in the semi-final stage and the draw already conducted, four teams are vying for the lucrative title.

Defending champions Orlando Pirates have a chance to retain their title and will meet Chippa United in Gqeberha. In the other semi-final tie, Mamelodi Sundowns are out to win their seventh title and will face Stellenbosch FC. Taking a glance at previous winners dating back to 1971, Kaizer Chiefs have the most titles than any other South African PSL outfit.

Nedbank Cup: Who are the Biggest Achievers in Terms of Titles

Taking a trip down memory lane, the Buccaneers defeated Sekhukhune United last season and are now touted as favourites. However, they face an uphill battle against Sundowns who are hungry for a quadruple.

    Number of Nedbank Cup Wins:

    Kaizer Chiefs (13):

Amakhosi downed their old nemesis, Pirates in the inaugural cup edition back in 1971. From that win, many more trophies followed for the Glamour Boys as they boast a record of 13 titles next to their historical name. Disappointingly, Chiefs were dispatched out of the competition via penalties when they were beaten by a less fancied Milford FC in the Last 32 in 2024.

    Orlando Pirates (9):

Under coach Jose Riveiro who is chasing his second Ke Yona trophy, the Pirates are now building a reputation as cup specialists. Unlike their rivals Chiefs, Pirates are now fighting for trophies as they don’t finish a season or two without one while Chiefs are set to finish nine seasons of trophy drought. The 1995 African champions are now targeting their 10th title and are slowly closing the gap on Amakhosi.

A look at their run so far, Pirates downed Crystal Lake 6-0 and netted four against Hungry Lions before thumping AmaZulu scoring 4 against two. Scoring 14 goals and conceding only two makes the Ghost hot favourites.

    Mamelodi Sundowns (6):

Coming to the reigning DStv Premiership champions, Sundowns have six Nedbank Cup trophies in their cabinet. Their mission is to go past Steve Barker’s outfit and book a spot in the final. Rulani Mokwena wants to win his maiden Ke Yona trophy and his men have been in fine form so far. They drubbed La Masia 6-1, beat Maritzburg United 2-0, and had to reach the penalty shootouts to brush off Tuks in the Last Eight. Meanwhile, Pitso Mosimane has two titles next to his name with Sundowns.

    SuperSport United (5):

Under various coaches such as Gavin Hunt, Pitso Mosimane, and Stuart Baxter, Amatsatsantsa A Pitori is one of the successful teams in this cup competition. SuperSport has five titles and like Chiefs, they are no longer taking part in the competition. Hunt’s men saw their exit last weekend and were beaten by Stellies.

    Bidvest Wits (2):

The now-defunct Bidvest Wits, with 2 Nedbank Cup wins, continue to appear in PSL history books despite their non-existence. The club was sold after the 2019/20 season to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila and the sale happened after winning its first PSL title in almost 100 years. Joining Wits with the same number of gold medals are Moroka Swallows and Cape Town Santos. Looking at some of the past Nedbank Cup winners, the likes of Free State Stars, TTM, TS Galaxy, and Bloemfontein Celtic have one trophy.

Meanwhile, the PSL is yet to announce the venues and dates for the semi-final matches but surely one team between Sundowns, Pirates, Chippa, and Stellenbosch will be crowned as the 2023/24 Nedbank Cup champions.
