Hosts Make Dream Start in Mexico City
The 2026 FIFA World Cup got underway in dramatic fashion on Thursday night as co hosts Mexico defeated Bafana Bafana 2-0 at a packed Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
In front of a passionate home crowd of more than 80,000 supporters, Mexico delivered a strong performance to claim all three points in the opening match of Group A. Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured victory for Javier Aguirre’s side, while South Africa’s hopes were severely damaged by two red cards.
The match marked South Africa’s return to the FIFA World Cup after a long absence and revived memories of the famous 2010 tournament opener between the same two nations in Johannesburg. This time, however, Mexico proved too strong on home soil.
Early Blow for Bafana Bafana
Bafana Bafana entered the match full of confidence after coach Hugo Broos insisted his side was ready to challenge the hosts despite Mexico’s home advantage. The South African squad featured several players from the successful Mamelodi Sundowns side and was led by captain Ronwen Williams in goal, while Lyle Foster spearheaded the attack.
However, South Africa’s plans were disrupted early in the contest. A defensive mistake from Sphephelo Sithole allowed Mexico to regain possession in a dangerous area. The ball eventually found Quiñones, who unleashed a powerful finish that beat Williams and sent the home supporters into celebration.
The goal settled Mexico’s nerves and gave the hosts control of the match. South Africa struggled to maintain possession and found it difficult to create clear scoring opportunities against a disciplined Mexican defence.
Red Cards Change the Contest
The decisive moment arrived shortly after halftime when Sithole’s difficult evening became even worse. The midfielder received a red card following a challenge on Brian Gutierrez, reducing South Africa to ten men and giving Mexico an even greater advantage.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Bafana Bafana attempted to stay in the contest. Mexico continued to push forward and eventually doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez rose highest inside the penalty area to head home Mexico’s second goal and effectively seal the result.
For Jiménez, the goal was a special moment. Playing in front of his home supporters, the experienced forward finally scored his first FIFA World Cup goal, adding another memorable chapter to his international career.
South Africa’s frustrations boiled over late in the game when Themba Zwane was shown a straight red card for violent conduct following a VAR review. The dismissal left Bafana Bafana with only nine players for the closing stages.
Mexico also finished the match with ten men after defender César Montes received a red card in stoppage time, but by then the result was already beyond doubt.
Tough Road Ahead for South Africa
While the result is disappointing for South Africa, the expanded 48 team World Cup format means qualification for the knockout stages remains possible. Bafana Bafana still have group matches against the Czech Republic and South Korea and will need positive results to keep their campaign alive.
Coach Hugo Broos will also have to deal with the suspensions of Sithole and Zwane, creating additional challenges ahead of the next fixture.
For Mexico, the victory provides the perfect start to their home tournament. The hosts handled the pressure of opening the World Cup and delivered a performance that delighted their supporters at the iconic Azteca Stadium. With confidence high and three valuable points secured, Mexico have immediately established themselves as strong contenders to progress from Group A.
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues, South Africa must quickly regroup and rediscover the form that earned them qualification, while Mexico can celebrate a memorable opening night in front of their passionate fans.
