    • FAQ: Bafana Bafana World Cup 2026 Squad

South Africa are at the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2010. Hugo Broos has named his 26-man Bafana Bafana World Cup 2026 squad, a group that blends PSL-based experience with a sprinkling of European-based players and two uncapped selections, all united by a single, long-awaited purpose: to finally get Bafana past the group stage.

President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the official send-off dinner in Pretoria alongside SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan to see the squad off. This is a national moment.

Here’s your complete guide to every player in the squad.

    How the Squad Was Built

There were few surprises when Broos named his final list, he largely stuck with the players who earned the country’s first appearance at the global finals in 16 years. Of the 26 players named:

    • 19 play in the Betway Premiership, a squad dominated by local talent
    • 5 play in Europe, led by Lyle Foster at Burnley
    • 2 play in the USA: Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Chicago Fire) and Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union)

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns dominate the selection, reflecting the quality of those two clubs in South African domestic football this season.

    The Goalkeepers

    Ronwen Williams (Captain)

The heartbeat of Bafana Bafana. Calm, analytical, and the holder of an extraordinary AFCON record for penalty saves. Williams has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers on the African continent for several years, and his leadership as captain gives the squad an experienced, composed presence in the most important position on the field.

    The Defenders

    Khuliso Mudau (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Right-back with good defensive fundamentals and a willingness to get forward. One of the more experienced defensive options in the squad.

    Nkosinathi Sibisi (Orlando Pirates)

A reliable central defensive option who has impressed in the PSL over recent seasons.

    Ime Okon (Hannover 96, Germany)

One of the European-based players in the squad. Okon’s experience in German football brings a different physical and tactical frame of reference to the backline.

    Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Chicago Fire, MLS)

Already making headlines before the tournament for earning a remarkable salary at Chicago Fire. A powerful and ambitious presence who has developed significantly since moving to the United States.

    Aubrey Modiba (Mamelodi Sundowns)

The first-choice left-back whose fitness was the main pre-tournament concern for Hugo Broos after a hamstring injury. He has returned to training and is expected to start.

    Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union, MLS)

One of the two uncapped players in the squad. The 22-year-old centre-back plays in Major League Soccer and was included to give Broos more defensive depth. He had no involvement in qualifying but has done enough in training and preparation to earn his place.

    Bradley Cross (Kaizer Chiefs)

The second uncapped player. The 25-year-old left-back, who was once in the academy at Newcastle United, has impressed with Kaizer Chiefs and earned a late call-up as an additional defensive option.

    The Midfielders

    Teboho Mokoena (Mamelodi Sundowns)

South Africa’s midfield engine. Mokoena has been a consistent performer for both club and country, bringing drive, energy, and goal threat from central positions. Arguably the most important outfield player in the squad.

    Thalente Mbatha (Orlando Pirates)

Combative and competitive, Mbatha is a midfield anchor who does the less glamorous but vital work of protecting the back four and winning second balls.

    Sphephelo Sithole (CD Tondela, Portugal)

One of the European-based players, Sithole brings a different dimension through his exposure to Portuguese football.

    Jayden Adams (Mamelodi Sundowns)

A technically gifted younger option in the engine room who has grown in stature over recent months.

    Oswin Appollis (Orlando Pirates)

One of the most exciting players in South African football. Playing as a winger or in a hybrid midfield/attacking role, Appollis combines electric pace with a low centre of gravity and an eye for defence-splitting passes. He nearly walked away from the sport in 2022 out of frustration, and the respect coach Kwanele Kopo showed him during a difficult period convinced him to keep going. His inclusion is a story of resilience as much as talent.

    The Forwards

    Evidence Makgopa (Orlando Pirates)

A powerful, direct striker with physical presence. Makgopa can cause problems for any central defence at this level with his strength and movement.

    Tshepang Moremi (Orlando Pirates)

Another Pirates attacker who offers pace and directness. The Orlando Pirates core of this squad reflects how dominant the Soweto club have been in South African football this season.

    Relebohile Mofokeng (Orlando Pirates)

At just 20 years old, Mofokeng is the player South Africans most excitedly whisper about. He had a brilliant PSL season and is one of the most technically gifted young players in African football. President Ramaphosa personally congratulated him at the squad announcement dinner, a mark of how much the country believes in him. Hugo Broos has backed him publicly despite earlier inconsistency at international level, and the belief is that the World Cup stage could unlock his full potential.

    Lyle Foster (Burnley, England)

The only British-based player in the squad. Foster, formerly of Orlando Pirates, has established himself in the English Championship at Burnley and brings European club football experience that few others in the squad can match.

    Iqraam Rayners (Mamelodi Sundowns)

A lively forward whose returns during qualification helped South Africa finish top of their qualifying group. Fast, direct, and capable of the unexpected.

    Themba Zwane (Mamelodi Sundowns)

The veteran of the group and a firm fan favourite. Zwane has been in and out of the squad amid recurring injuries, but Broos clearly rates him. His experience and technical quality give Bafana an option capable of changing games from the bench.

Thapelo Maseko (AEL Limassol, on loan from Sundowns)

The internationally experienced attacker adds another forward option, currently based in Cyprus.

    How Bafana Bafana Qualified

South Africa’s road to the 2026 World Cup was dramatic to the end. They finished top of their CAF qualifying group with 18 points from 10 matches (W5 D3 L2), though that total was reached despite a 3-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player in their home win over Lesotho.

The qualification was secured in style: a 3-0 final-round victory over Rwanda, coupled with Nigeria’s results elsewhere, confirmed South Africa’s place in North America. It was their fourth World Cup appearance overall, and crucially, their first away from home since 2002.

What SA Need to Progress From Group A

Advancing from Group A is achievable. In the expanded 48-team format, the top two in each group qualify automatically. The eight best third-placed teams also advance to the round of 32.

Mexico are the group favourites as hosts, ranked around 14th in the world. South Korea are a dangerous, technically polished side. Czech Republic are solid but not explosive.

    Bafana’s path:

    • Get something from Mexico tonight (a draw would be enormous)
    • Beat Czech Republic or South Korea in their remaining two fixtures
    • At minimum, finish third with enough points to be one of the eight best third-placed teams

South Africa have never progressed past the group stage at a World Cup. That changes in 2026.
