Bafana Bafana’s historic FIFA World Cup run ended in painful fashion after a 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32 at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday night.
South Africa were minutes away from forcing extra time, but Stephen Eustáquio struck in the 92nd minute to send Canada into the last 16 for the first time in their history.
A Brave Defensive Effort
Hugo Broos’ side spent large parts of the match under pressure, with Canada enjoying more control and creating the clearer chances. Bafana defended with discipline, stayed compact and frustrated the North Americans for most of the contest.
Canada had a first-half chance cleared off the line, while a penalty appeal was also checked by VAR but not given.
Eustáquio Breaks South African Hearts
Just when the match looked set for extra time, Eustáquio produced the decisive moment. His powerful strike from the edge of the area beat the South African defence and sparked emotional Canadian celebrations.
The goal sealed Canada’s first ever World Cup knockout victory and booked a Round of 16 meeting with either Morocco or the Netherlands.
Broos Proud Despite Exit
After the match, Broos admitted Canada had more power and speed, saying South Africa struggled to match the physical intensity of the game. However, he also praised his players for reaching the knockout stage, calling it a major step forward for Bafana Bafana.
A Tournament to Remember
Although the defeat hurts, Bafana leave the tournament with pride. Reaching the World Cup knockout rounds was a major achievement and showed the progress made under Broos.
South Africa’s journey may be over, but this campaign has given supporters reason to believe again.
