A right-handed top-order batter and right-arm off-spin bowler, he is regarded as a technically proficient batsman with leadership experience in both domestic and franchise cricket.

Markram made his international debut for South Africa in September 2017 and has since featured in Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket. He has also played extensively in domestic competitions and global T20 leagues. In franchise cricket, he captained Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league, leading the side to consecutive titles in its early seasons. He was a member of the South African team that won the 2025 ICC World Test Championship final and was named Player of the Match for his second-innings century in the final.

    Early Life and Background

Aiden Markram was born in Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa. He attended Pretoria Boys’ High School, where he developed as a cricketer and gained recognition for his batting ability at youth level. Markram represented South Africa at various age-group levels and captained the South Africa Under-19 team, gaining prominence during youth international tournaments.

His performances at school and youth level established him as one of South Africa’s promising top-order batters, leading to his progression into senior domestic cricket.

    Domestic Career

Markram began his domestic career with Northerns in 2014 and later became associated with the Titans franchise in 2016. He established himself as a consistent top-order batter in South African domestic competitions, contributing significantly in first-class and limited-overs formats.

In county cricket, he represented Durham in 2018 and Hampshire in 2019, gaining experience in English conditions. His time in county cricket contributed to the refinement of his technique, particularly in longer formats of the game.

Domestically, Markram has been recognized for his ability to anchor innings while maintaining scoring fluency, as well as for providing part-time off-spin bowling options.

    International Career

    Test Career

Markram made his Test debut for South Africa in September 2017. He quickly established himself in the top order, registering centuries early in his career. Known for his composed stroke play and strong back-foot game, he became a regular member of the South African Test side.

A significant milestone in his career came during the 2025 ICC World Test Championship final, where he scored 136 runs off 207 balls in the second innings. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award and contributed to South Africa securing the title, marking the nation’s second ICC trophy.

    One Day International Career

Markram has represented South Africa in ODI cricket as a top-order batter and occasional off-spin bowler. In this format, he has contributed both as an accumulator and as an attacking option depending on match situations. He has participated in bilateral series and ICC tournaments, offering balance to the side through his dual skill set.

    Twenty20 International Career

In T20I cricket, Markram has been utilized as a dynamic batter capable of accelerating the scoring rate while also providing part-time spin. His adaptability has made him a regular selection in South Africa’s T20I squads, particularly in major ICC T20 tournaments.

    Franchise and League Career

Markram has participated in multiple domestic and international T20 leagues. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he represented Punjab Kings in 2021 and later Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2022 to 2024. He subsequently joined Lucknow Super Giants in 2025.

In South Africa’s SA20 league, he captained Sunrisers Eastern Cape from the competition’s inception in 2022 until his release ahead of the 2025 auction. Under his leadership, the team won consecutive SA20 titles in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. His tenure as captain was noted for tactical discipline and consistent top-order contributions.

He later represented Durban’s Super Giants in 2026, continuing his involvement in franchise cricket.

    Playing Style

Markram is primarily a right-handed top-order batter known for his orthodox technique and balanced stance. He is particularly strong through the off side and comfortable against pace bowling. In Test cricket, he is recognized for his patience and ability to construct long innings, while in limited-overs formats he adapts his tempo according to match demands.

As a right-arm off-break bowler, Markram provides a supplementary spin option. While not a frontline bowler, he has delivered key overs in both ODI and T20 cricket, offering tactical flexibility.
