Liverpool continued their impressive form under new manager Arne Slot, cruising to a 2-0 victory over Bologna on Tuesday, 02 October 2024, in the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, giants Real Madrid and Bayern Munich suffered stunning defeats, leaving football fans across Europe in disbelief.

UEFA Champions League: Liverpool’s Winning Streak

At Anfield, Liverpool displayed their usual dominance, with Alexis Mac Allister opening the scoring after converting Mohamed Salah’s cross in the early stages. Bologna, making their Champions League debut, put up a spirited fight with Dan Ndoye hitting the post. However, Salah sealed the win for the Reds, curling a beautiful shot into the net during the final quarter, ensuring Liverpool’s second victory over Italian opposition this season.

Arne Slot, now the first Liverpool manager to win eight out of his first nine games, praised his team’s commitment and adaptability. “It’s not impossible to do something special at this club. The effort and belief from the players have been extraordinary,” Slot remarked.

    Real Madrid Shocked by Lille

In France, Real Madrid, the reigning champions, were dealt a major blow, losing 1-0 to Lille. Jonathan David’s penalty just before half-time condemned Carlo Ancelotti’s side to their first loss in 37 matches. Madrid star Kylian Mbappe made his return from injury as a substitute but couldn’t turn the game around.

“It’s been a bad night for us, and there are no excuses,” said a visibly disappointed Ancelotti. Despite late efforts to equalize, Lille’s goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier made a series of crucial saves, securing a memorable win for the French side.

Bayern Munich Stunned by Aston Villa

In a repeat of the 1982 European Cup final, Bayern Munich fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa. Colombian forward Jhon Duran’s stunning lob in the 79th minute caught Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer out of position, handing Villa their second win in a row in their first Champions League appearance in over four decades.

Villa’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, pulled off a brilliant late save to deny Harry Kane an equalizer, ensuring a famous night for the Birmingham side. “This was the loudest Villa Park I’ve heard since I joined the club. It’s a statement,” said Martinez.

Juventus Prevails While Atletico Madrid Crumbles

Elsewhere, Juventus battled to a thrilling 3-2 victory against RB Leipzig despite going down to 10 men. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid suffered a humbling 4-0 defeat to Benfica, leaving Diego Simeone’s side reeling.

In other matches, Monaco came from behind to draw 2-2 with Dinamo Zagreb, and Atalanta cruised to a 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

The night of Champions League football delivered unexpected twists, with Liverpool soaring while Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were left to pick up the pieces after shocking losses.
