Mamelodi Sundowns took a giant step towards the CAF Champions League group stages with a commanding 4-0 victory over Mbabane Swallows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday evening.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Mbabane Results and Highlights

The Brazilians, seeking their 10th consecutive group stage appearance, wasted no time asserting their dominance. Lucas Ribeiro Costa opened the scoring from the penalty spot just three minutes into the game after Asekho Tiwani was fouled in the box. Mosa Lebusa doubled the lead ten minutes later with a free header, and debutant Iqraam Rayners added a third before halftime.

Costa completed the rout with a crisp finish ten minutes into the second half, leaving the Swallows with a mountain to climb in the second leg. The only downside for Sundowns was an injury to striker Arthur Sales in the first half, who was replaced by Thapelo Maseko.

The victory puts Sundowns in a commanding position ahead of the second leg, which will also be played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium next week.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Sundowns’ dominant display highlighted the gulf in class between the two sides.
    • The Brazilians’ attacking prowess was on full display, with four different players getting on the scoresheet.
    • The injury to Arthur Sales is a concern for Sundowns, but they have the depth to cope with his absence.
    • The Mbabane face a near-impossible task in the second leg, needing to overturn a four-goal deficit.

Overall, Sundowns’ victory was a statement of intent. They are determined to make another deep run in the CAF Champions League, and on this evidence, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
