As the Springboks prepare to face Argentina in their Rugby Championship finale on Saturday, 21 September 2024, Siya Kolisi will be stepping into a unique role within the coaching setup. Despite not being included in the matchday-23, Kolisi will support the team from the sidelines, providing valuable insights and leadership.

    Rassie Erasmus’ Plan for Kolisi

Rassie Erasmus has confirmed that Kolisi will join the coaching staff for this crucial match, even though he will not be on the field. Kolisi made the trip with the 28-man squad but will not feature in the game against Los Pumas (Argentina) in Santiago del Estero. Instead, Salmaan Moerat will captain the team after recovering from a concussion sustained earlier in the tournament.

    Coaching Experience

Erasmus outlined that the initial plan was to have Kolisi contribute as a supporting member of the squad rather than as a player. “Siya wasn’t brought here to play but to be on standby in case of injury and to help lead the team off the field,” said Erasmus. “We wanted him to gain experience in the coaching box and understand the decision-making process, similar to what we did with Duane Vermeulen during the 2023 World Cup.”

Kolisi’s presence with the coaches will offer him a new perspective on how decisions are made and messages are relayed during the game. This experience aims to provide him with a comprehensive understanding of the coaching dynamics, enhancing his future contributions to the team.

    Springboks vs Argentina: Future Availability

Erasmus also mentioned that Kolisi could be available for the return match against Argentina at Mbombela Stadium next week, before attending to his broken nose. “He can still play next week and then get his nose treated,” Erasmus noted. “The recovery can take between four to six weeks, so he will address it after the Test at Mbombela.”

The Springboks are on the brink of securing the Rugby Championship title, and Kolisi’s involvement in the coaching setup is set to add a significant boost to the team’s preparations and performance.
