The first half between Uganda and Bafana Bafana in their Group K decider at the Mandela Stadium has ended goalless. But shortly after the second half started, Thapelo Morena gave Bafana 1-0 lead. Both teams, already qualified for AFCON 2025, are battling for the top spot in the group.

    First-Half Highlights

The opening minutes saw Uganda and South Africa trade early moves without threatening the goal. Bafana Bafana’s possession-based approach created some promising moments down the flanks, with Modiba and Appollis linking well. Uganda, on the other hand, focused on quick transitions, particularly on the left wing.

Defensive strength dominated the half, with neither side allowing clear chances. Physicality was on display as Uganda’s Lwanga received a yellow card for a heavy tackle. Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana’s defensive pairing handled Uganda’s direct play efficiently.

    Tactical Dynamics

South Africa showcased patience in their buildup but struggled to convert their dominance into opportunities. Uganda relied on pace and physicality to unsettle the visitors but found it difficult to breach their organized defense.

    Second Half Update

    Second Half: Bafana Bafana Breakthrough

South Africa returned to the pitch more aggressive, and it didn’t take long for them to take the lead. In the 49th minute, substitute Morena made an immediate impact, scoring the opener after a great build-up, giving Bafana Bafana a 1-0 advantage.

Uganda had their moments, but it was Bafana Bafana who looked more likely to extend their lead. In the 55th minute, Bafana had a break down the right, and Modiba won a corner. However, Dortley’s header from the corner was easily collected by the Ugandan keeper.

    Uganda’s Missed Chances

Uganda had a golden opportunity to level the score in the 52nd minute when a header back to the Ugandan keeper by South Africa’s Dortley was too short, allowing Uganda a free shot on goal, but the attempt went well wide.

Bafana Bafana then survived a scare when Rayners missed a golden chance to make it 2-0 in the 80th minute, firing wide after an error from the Ugandan keeper.

    The Sealing Goal

The match was put to bed in the 89th minute when Patrick Maswanganyi received a searching lob from Iqraam Rayners. With a swift turn, Maswanganyi unleashed a low shot into the back of the net, sealing the victory for Bafana Bafana with a 2-0 scoreline.

    Final Thoughts

Bafana Bafana’s win puts them in a strong position in Group K. Their clinical second-half performance, especially the late goals, secured them three important points. Uganda, despite some promising attacks, couldn’t capitalize on their chances and were left to rue missed opportunities. With both teams already qualified for AFCON 2025, this result solidifies South Africa’s position at the top of the group heading into the final matches.

Final score: Uganda 0-2 Bafana Bafana
