    Leonardo Castro’s Scintillating Form Continues

Leonardo Castro, the Colombian striker who once thrilled South African fans with his performances for Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, is now setting the United States League One alight with Greenville Triumph SC. After a rocky period following his departure from Chiefs in 2022, Castro has rediscovered his scoring touch and become a key figure for his new club.

A Strong Start in the US

Castro’s journey to the US wasn’t straightforward. Released by Chiefs at the end of the 2021/22 season, he struggled to find a new club and returned to Colombia. However, his talent didn’t go unnoticed for long. In March 2023, Greenville Triumph offered him a lifeline, and Castro grabbed it with both hands.

He immediately impressed in his debut season, netting an impressive 13 goals and contributing four assists. His efforts were crucial in propelling Greenville Triumph to the playoffs, and his performances were rewarded with the club’s Player of the Year award. Recognising his value, the club secured his services for another season.

Carrying Momentum into the New Season

The 2024 season has seen Castro pick up right where he left off. Having signed a contract extension, he seems to be even more motivated. He’s already opened his goal-scoring account for the new campaign, demonstrating his unwavering determination to succeed.

A Goal Poacher with an Eye for Glory

Castro’s reputation as a clinical finisher precedes him. During his time in South Africa, he was known for his ability to find the back of the net in crucial moments. This trait has continued in the US. Notably, in a recent match against Charlotte Independence, Castro scored a brace in first-half injury time, turning the game on its head and propelling his team towards victory.

    A Threat to League Rivals

With 10 goals already to his name in 20 appearances this year, Castro has climbed to third place in the USL League One Golden Boot race. This signifies a significant threat to other strikers in the league and highlights his goal-scoring prowess.

    Greenville Triumph’s Playoff Push

Castro’s goals have been instrumental in Greenville Triumph’s current good form. The team is currently unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 games and is pushing hard for a playoff spot. With Castro leading the line, they have a real chance of achieving postseason success.

A Colombian Success Story in the US

Leonardo Castro’s journey in the US is a testament to his resilience and talent. After what has been a challenging period following his departure from South Africa, he has found a new home and a platform to shine. South African fans will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on his progress and hoping to see him continue his goal-scoring exploits.
