Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has once again opted to exclude striker Percy Tau and fan favourite Tshegofatso Mabasa from the final squad that will take on Congo-Brazzaville in two critical Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches in October 2024.
Bafana Squad Announcement and Surprising Omissions
Broos made the announcement at the SABC studios on Thursday afternoon, where he trimmed the initial 32-man provisional squad down to a final 23 players. These players are set to assemble next week ahead of the first match in Gqeberha. Among the surprising omissions are goalkeeper Veli Mothwa, defender Siyabonga Ngezana, and, notably, Percy Tau.
Forward Tshegofatso Mabasa, last season’s top scorer in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), was also considered after fans and experts alike suggested he should be on Broos’ radar. Despite this, Mabasa has not made the final cut for the matches against Congo.
Thabiso Sesane and Luke Le Roux Make the Cut
One player who has caught the eye of the national coach is Pirates’ centre-back Thabiso Sesane, who continues to impress at club level and has earned his place in the squad. Sesane’s inclusion highlights his growing stature in South African football. In midfield, Luke Le Roux has been retained, showing Broos’ confidence in his abilities.
Captain Ronwen Williams returns to the squad after missing the two previous qualifiers in September. His absence was felt in the 2-2 draw against Uganda and the thrilling 3-2 victory over South Sudan, but Williams is now set to lead the team as they aim to secure their AFCON qualification.
Afcon Qualifiers: Upcoming Matches and Qualification Hopes
Bafana will first host Congo in Gqeberha before travelling for the away leg, where they will hope to continue their momentum and edge closer to securing a spot at next year’s AFCON tournament.
