Mamelodi Sundowns continued their pursuit of the Betway Premiership summit after securing a determined 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday evening. Despite being forced to play the final half hour of the match with ten men, the Brazilians showed resilience and tactical discipline to claim all three points and remain firmly in the title race alongside Orlando Pirates.
The result ensured Sundowns kept pace with Pirates at the top of the table, with both teams now level on 44 points after the Buccaneers defeated Polokwane City 2-1 in their own fixture at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. However, the Pretoria giants remain in second place due to a marginal goal difference.
Even Contest Early On
The opening stages of the match mirrored the intensity of the reverse fixture played earlier in the season in KwaZulu-Natal, where Golden Arrows handed Sundowns their first defeat of the campaign thanks to a decisive strike from Sede Dion.
Both sides approached the contest with confidence and attacking intent, exchanging possession and probing for openings in what was a competitive start to the match. Golden Arrows looked eager to repeat their earlier success, while Sundowns sought to assert their dominance on home soil.
Miguel Cardoso’s side gradually began to take greater control of proceedings through their crisp passing and intelligent movement in midfield. Their patience eventually paid off when a beautifully constructed move involving quick one-touch football carved open the Arrows defence.
The sequence ended with Teboho Mokoena arriving perfectly to meet the final pass before smashing a powerful strike into the bottom corner of Thakasani Mbanjwa’s goal. The well-worked finish gave Sundowns a deserved lead and injected confidence into the hosts as they continued to dictate the rhythm of the match.
Golden Arrows attempted to respond before halftime but struggled to create clear opportunities against a disciplined Sundowns backline. The home side maintained their advantage and carried the momentum into the break.
Rayners Extends Sundowns Advantage
Sundowns wasted little time after the restart to extend their lead and place themselves in a commanding position. Just two minutes into the second half, Arthur Sales delivered a precise cross into the box that found Iqraam Rayners perfectly positioned.
The striker met the ball with a first-time header that flew past Mbanjwa and into the back of the net. The goal marked Rayners’ ninth league strike of the season and highlighted his growing importance in Sundowns’ attacking setup.
With a two-goal cushion, the Brazilians looked set to comfortably see out the match. However, the complexion of the contest changed dramatically shortly afterwards.
Adams Red Card Changes the Momentum
Sundowns were forced into a tactical reshuffle when midfielder Jayden Adams received a straight red card following a dangerous tackle on Ayabulela Maxwele. The challenge saw Maxwele’s ankle roll awkwardly, leaving the referee with little hesitation in issuing the dismissal.
The sending-off meant Sundowns had to play more than thirty minutes with ten men, forcing Cardoso to quickly adjust his team’s structure to maintain control in midfield.
Arthur Sales was withdrawn soon after the red card, with Marcelo Allende introduced to add stability and defensive balance alongside the tireless Mokoena. The attacking trio of Nuno Santos, Tashreeq Matthews and Rayners remained up front as Sundowns attempted to maintain their threat while protecting their lead.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Sundowns continued to create chances and even thought they had secured a third goal. A shot from Nuno Santos deflected off Rayners and found the back of the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside in a decision that appeared questionable.
Arrows Fight Back Late
Golden Arrows eventually found a route back into the game late in the second half when they were awarded a penalty. League top scorer Sede Junior Dion stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, sending Ronwen Williams the wrong way to register his tenth goal of the season.
The goal set up a tense finish as Arrows pushed forward in search of an equaliser against the ten-man Sundowns side. However, the hosts remained composed under pressure, managing the closing stages effectively to secure an important victory.
Title Race Remains Tight
The win ensures Sundowns remain firmly in the Betway Premiership title race as the battle with Orlando Pirates continues to intensify. With both teams locked on 44 points, every result now carries enormous significance in what is shaping up to be a thrilling contest for the league crown.
For Sundowns, the victory also demonstrated their resilience and ability to grind out results even under difficult circumstances. Playing a large portion of the match with ten men could have derailed their chances, but their composure and tactical discipline ultimately ensured they walked away with three crucial points.
