In a surprising turn of events, German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has rejoined Manchester City on a free transfer, just one year after departing for FC Barcelona. The 33-year-old has penned an initial one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months, making a swift return to the club where he achieved remarkable success.

Ilkay Gundogan to Man City: Transfer Details

Manchester City secured Gundogan’s services without paying a transfer fee, as the midfielder agreed to forgo the remaining two years of his salary at Barcelona. This financial sacrifice underscores his desire to return to the Etihad Stadium and contribute to Pep Guardiola’s relentless pursuit of trophies.

    A Familiar Face

Gundogan is no stranger to Manchester City, having spent seven illustrious years with the club between 2016 and 2023. During his previous stint, he made over 300 appearances, scoring 60 goals and lifting an impressive 14 trophies, including five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the coveted UEFA Champions League.

In his final season at City, Gundogan captained the team to an unprecedented treble, clinching the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup. His leadership and composure on the pitch proved vital as City etched their names in football history.

    New Chapter

Despite playing a significant role for Barcelona last season, Gundogan was not guaranteed a regular starting spot under new coach Hansi Flick. This uncertainty, coupled with the lure of returning to familiar surroundings, prompted his decision to rejoin Manchester City.

Gundogan’s return adds depth and experience to City’s midfield, providing Guardiola with a reliable option in the center of the park. His ability to dictate play, create chances, and contribute crucial goals makes him a valuable asset for the reigning Premier League champions.

    A Warm Welcome

Upon his return, Gundogan expressed his delight at rejoining his former teammates and the club’s staff. He emphasized his happiness and eagerness to contribute to the team’s continued success. “And what can I say about my teammates here at City…they are world-class footballers. I am genuinely delighted to have the chance to train and play alongside them,” says Gundogan. “Honestly, I cannot wait to wear the City shirt again.”

The free transfer of Ilkay Gundogan represents a shrewd piece of business for Manchester City. His experience, leadership, and undeniable quality will undoubtedly bolster their chances of achieving further glory in the upcoming season.
