As discussions around Teboho Mokoena’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns intensify, one thing is clear: the star midfielder’s position on the team appears precarious, despite the unwavering support from Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.

Mokoena, who had a standout season last year and was considered pivotal for both his club and national team, has yet to make an appearance in the current campaign. This absence raises eyebrows, especially given his potential and previous performances.

Teboho Mokoena in Sundowns Shadows: Competition in the Squad

Manqoba Mngqithi, Sundowns’ head coach, has shed light on Mokoena’s situation, indicating that competition within the squad is fierce. He pointed to Rivaldo Coetzee’s exceptional performances in the number 6 role as a key reason for Mokoena’s exclusion.

Mngqithi commended Coetzee for his skills, noting that he has effectively filled the number 6 position for the team in the past. He highlighted Coetzee’s versatility, mentioning his ability to use both feet and his impressive game-reading skills. Mngqithi described Coetzee as a key leader who maintains a strong awareness of his surroundings during matches.

    Playing Styles and Team Needs

The coach emphasized the need for stability in the holding role, suggesting that Mokoena, despite his talent, may be more suited to a different position. He indicated that he envisions Mokoena as more of a number 8, where his dynamism, tenacity, and goal-scoring potential could be more advantageous for the team’s future. Nonetheless, he acknowledged Mokoena’s capability to play as a number 6 as well.

Mngqithi elaborated on the differences between Mokoena and Coetzee, stating that while he respects Mokoena’s abilities and will keep him in mind for future selections, the two players have different styles and strengths.

    The Road Ahead

As Mokoena continues to find himself sidelined, the uncertainty around his future at Sundowns grows. Despite Broos’ faith in him at the national level, the player will need to find a way to reclaim his spot in a competitive lineup if he hopes to secure his place in the squad and maintain his upward trajectory. With European clubs reportedly interested in him post-Africa Cup of Nations, Mokoena’s next moves will be closely watched as he navigates this critical juncture in his career.
