The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage continues to deliver drama, heartbreak and brilliance in equal measure – and for African football supporters, Tuesday’s results brought a mixed bag of emotions.

Algeria Edge Jordan in Tense San Francisco Affair

The brightest African result of the midweek round came from the Bay Area, where Algeria secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Jordan. The Desert Foxes showed the kind of resilience and tactical discipline that has long defined their best performances on the continental stage – and now they are carrying that form to the grandest stage of all. Algeria’s midfield controlled the tempo intelligently, and their finishing, when the moments arrived, was clinical. Jordan fought admirably and pulled a goal back to set nerves jangling, but Algeria held firm. For Djamel Belmadi’s men, this result could prove to be a pivotal three points as the group stage tightens. South African fans with a keen eye on African progress will be watching Algeria’s remaining fixtures closely.

Heartbreak for Senegal in New York

The result that will sting most across the continent came from New Jersey, where Senegal fell 3-2 to Norway in a pulsating encounter. The Lions of Teranga are one of Africa’s most celebrated sides and arrived in the United States carrying genuine knockout-round ambitions. They were not without quality on the night – scoring twice and showing flashes of the attacking intent that makes them dangerous – but Norway’s clinical edge proved the difference. The Scandinavians were sharp in transition and punished defensive lapses with the kind of efficiency that South African supporters know all too well from watching Bafana Bafana over the years. For Senegal, the defeat leaves their group-stage hopes hanging by a thread. Their campaign now requires a strong final group performance to have any chance of progressing.

Ronaldo and Portugal Put on a Show in Houston

Portugal dismantled Uzbekistan 5-0 in Houston in what was a statement performance by one of the tournament’s heavyweight contenders. Cristiano Ronaldo, showing no signs of slowing despite his age, led the charge with his trademark hunger in front of goal. The result was emphatic and sends a clear message to the rest of the field. Portugal’s movement in attack was relentless, with Uzbekistan simply unable to contain the waves of pressure. Roberto Martinez’s side look sharp, confident and well-organised – a team that no nation would want to meet in the knockout rounds.

France and Argentina Keep Their Machines Running

In Philadelphia, France were composed and authoritative in a 3-0 dismissal of Iraq. Les Bleus are quietly building momentum, with Kylian Mbappe and company finding rhythm at the right time of the tournament. There was little to fault in their performance – structured, purposeful and ultimately convincing.

In Dallas, Argentina secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Austria. Lionel Scaloni’s defending champions continue to tick over without conceding, and while they have not quite hit full stride, the results keep coming.

With the group stage nearing its decisive final round, Algeria remain Africa’s most compelling story – while Senegal must regroup quickly to keep their World Cup dream alive.
