Saturday the 23rd of May promises to be one of those special afternoons in South African football, with seven Betway Premiership fixtures all kicking off simultaneously at 15:00 across the country. From the coastal heat of KwaZulu-Natal to the highveld of Limpopo and the heartland of the Free State, there is no shortage of storylines, rivalry, and ambition on the line this weekend.
The Durban Derby Double
KwaZulu-Natal gets not one but two matches of real local interest on Saturday. At Chatsworth Stadium, Durban City take on AmaZulu FC in what shapes up as a fierce provincial clash. AmaZulu will be eager to impose their experience and quality on a Durban City side still finding its feet in the top flight. Usuthu’s supporters travel to Chatsworth expecting nothing less than a statement performance.
Meanwhile, across the city at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium, Golden Arrows host TS Galaxy in a fixture that carries real mid-table significance. Abafana Bes’thende have traditionally treated their home ground as a fortress, and they will need that advantage if they are to contain a Galaxy outfit that has shown flashes of genuine quality this season. This one could be tighter than many expect.
Chiefs Look to Impress at Moses Mabhida
The standout fixture of the round takes place at the magnificent Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, where Kaizer Chiefs welcome Chippa United. Amakhosi faithful will pack the terraces hoping to see their beloved club deliver the kind of performance that reminds everyone why this institution remains one of the biggest in African football. Chippa, ever the awkward opponents, are never easy to break down and will arrive in Durban with a defensive game plan and plenty of fight. Chiefs will need creativity and patience to unlock them.
Limpopo Double-Header
The Limpopo province hosts two matches simultaneously, adding an intriguing local flavour to the day. At Seshego Stadium in Polokwane, Magesi FC face Richards Bay in a clash between two sides who need points badly. Magesi on home soil are a different proposition altogether, and Richards Bay will need to be at their most organised to leave with anything.
Down the road at Peter Mokaba Stadium, Sekhukhune United take on Siwelele in what promises to be a physical, hard-fought encounter. Babina Noko will be determined to use home advantage to grind out a result, while Siwelele will be looking to cause an upset and keep their own season’s ambitions alive.
Pirates Travel, Gallants Host
At the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Orbit College FC host Orlando Pirates in the fixture that neutral supporters across the country will be watching closely. The Buccaneers are one of the PSL’s elite, and taking on a side of Pirates’ stature represents a massive occasion for Orbit College. Pirates, however, will treat this match with the same seriousness they do every fixture, arriving in Nelspruit focused and organised.
Finally, at Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein, Marumo Gallants face Stellenbosch FC. Stellenbosch have been one of the most progressive outfits in the league in recent seasons, and Gallants will need to be sharp to contain them. Expect technical, intelligent football from both sides in what could be the most aesthetically pleasing match of the round.
Seven games, one kick-off time – South African football at its most electric. Do not miss a moment.
