Saturday the 23rd of May promises to be a blockbuster afternoon of Betway Premiership football, with seven fixtures kicking off simultaneously at 15:00 across the country. From the streets of Durban to the highlands of Limpopo, South African football fans will be spoilt for choice as the season edges toward its conclusion.

    The Durban Derby Showdown

The coastal city of Durban takes centre stage this weekend, hosting no fewer than three top-flight fixtures. The most emotionally charged of the lot is the KwaZulu-Natal derby between Durban City and AmaZulu FC at Chatsworth Stadium. Local pride is always on the line when these two sides meet, and with AmaZulu still harbouring ambitions of finishing the season strongly, Usuthu will not want to drop points to a neighbouring rival. Expect a heated, combative affair in front of what should be a passionate crowd in Chatsworth.

Just across the city, Golden Arrows host TS Galaxy at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium. Abafana Bes’thende have the advantage of familiar surroundings, and will be looking to use that comfort to their benefit against a Galaxy side that has shown flashes of quality but has too often struggled with consistency this season. This one has the makings of a tight, tactical contest where a moment of individual brilliance could prove decisive.

Chiefs on the Road – but Still at Home

In what is arguably the fixture of the round, Kaizer Chiefs take on Chippa United at the magnificent Moses Mabhida Stadium. Though technically a home fixture for Chiefs based on the venue allocation, Amakhosi will carry the weight of a large and expectant travelling support. Under their current technical setup, Chiefs have been seeking greater consistency, and a convincing result against a Chippa side fighting for their Premiership survival would do their confidence a world of good. For Chippa, every point at this stage of the season is nothing short of priceless.

    Pirates Travel to Mpumalanga

One of the standout matchups on paper sees Orbit College FC face Orlando Pirates at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit. The Buccaneers, who have been among the more dynamic sides in the league this term, will be heavy favourites – but football in South Africa has a wonderful habit of humbling the mighty. Orbit College will relish the occasion and the opportunity to test themselves against one of the country’s most storied clubs. Pirates, however, will be determined to maintain their rhythm and collect three points on the road.

    Limpopo and Beyond

In Polokwane, neighbours Magesi FC and Richards Bay square off at Seshego Stadium in a fixture that carries genuine mid-table significance. Both clubs will want to end the campaign on a high, and there is enough quality in each squad to produce an entertaining spectacle.

Meanwhile, at Peter Mokaba Stadium, Sekhukhune United host Siwelele in a Limpopo derby full of local bragging rights. The atmosphere at Peter Mokaba always carries extra heat for provincial clashes, and this one should be no different.

Rounding out the day’s action, Marumo Gallants welcome Stellenbosch FC to Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. Stellenbosch, one of the better organised outfits in the division, will fancy their chances of picking up points away from home, while Gallants will be eager to give their supporters something to celebrate.

All seven fixtures kick off at 15:00 on Saturday, 23 May. It is a full Betway Premiership afternoon, and South African football rarely does it better than this.
