The South African track icon and world record holder, Wayde van Niekerk, has failed to qualify for the 200-meter finals. His pursuit of a second Olympic medal came to a premature end at the 2024 Paris Games after he finished last in his 200m semi-final with a time of 20.72 seconds on Wednesday night, 07 August 2024.

Wayde van Niekerk Crushing Blow to Olympic Hopes

Van Niekerk, the world record holder in the 400m and a gold medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, was unable to replicate his previous successes in the shorter sprint distance. Finishing last in his semi-final heat alongside Nigerian Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike, the sprinter faced a crushing blow to his hopes of securing a medal in this year’s games. He lagged behind the leading pack in what almost seemed like an easy jog but not enough to catch on with the first and second-place holders, Erriyon Khighton, and Joseph Fahnbulleh.

    Triumph and Disappointment

The 32-year-old, renowned for his world record-breaking 400m gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, had shifted his focus to the 200m in Paris after battling injuries in recent years due to celebrity touch rugby for charity. His appearance in the semi-final was an achievement in itself, considering he narrowly qualified for the heats. However, facing a formidable field and 200m specialists, including Noah Lyles, Erriyon Khighton, and Letsile Tebogo, he was unable to reproduce the form that had once made him a global sensation.

200m Not Van Niekerk’s Main Event

While the 200m might not be van Niekerk’s primary event, his absence from the final is a significant disappointment for the athlete and his countless supporters in South Africa and around the world. The sprinter had been vocal about his desire to achieve success in both the 200m and 400m events at this Olympics.

Despite the setback, van Niekerk’s legacy in athletics remains secure. His world record-breaking performance cemented his place as one of the sport’s all-time greats. His journey back to the Olympic stage after a career-threatening injury has been an inspiration to many.
