The Durban Derby Double
KwaZulu-Natal is the heartbeat of Saturday’s action, hosting no fewer than three top-flight fixtures on the same afternoon. The most emotionally charged of the trio is undoubtedly the meeting of Durban City and AmaZulu FC at Chatsworth Stadium. Usuthu carry the weight of expectation wherever they travel, and a trip to Chatsworth – home turf for the upstart City side – will be no stroll in the park. AmaZulu need points to stay relevant in the standings, while Durban City will be eager to announce themselves on a bigger stage.
Just across the city at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium, Golden Arrows host TS Galaxy in a fixture that tends to produce more quality than its billing suggests. Abafana Bes’thende play with a gritty home comfort at KGZ, and Galaxy will need to guard against the counter-attacking pace that Arrows have used to trouble bigger sides this season.
The jewel of the Durban triple-header, however, is at Moses Mabhida Stadium, where Kaizer Chiefs welcome Chippa United. Amakhosi faithful will be watching nervously, knowing their side has flattered to deceive at key moments this term. Chippa, the Chilli Boys from Gqeberha, are never easy opposition and will fancy their chances against a Chiefs outfit that has looked vulnerable at the back. Expect a tense, physical encounter in front of what should be a lively yellow and gold crowd.
Limpopo in the Spotlight
Up in Polokwane, two matches run concurrently. Magesi FC take on Richards Bay at Seshego Stadium in a tie that carries real survival stakes. Magesi have punched above their weight this season and their home form has been quietly impressive. Richards Bay, for their part, cannot afford to travel north and come home empty-handed. Expect a physical battle with little room for error.
Across the province at Peter Mokaba Stadium, Sekhukhune United face Siwelele in what shapes up as a fiercely contested Limpopo affair. Sekhukhune have the experience of PSL battles behind them, but Siwelele have shown enough spirit this campaign to suggest they will not simply roll over.
Mbombela Showpiece
Perhaps the most intriguing fixture on the card comes from Nelspruit, where Orbit College FC host Orlando Pirates at Mbombela Stadium. The Buccaneers are the class act in this tie on paper, but Pirates have developed a habit this season of making straightforward assignments complicated. Orbit College will play without fear – a dangerous combination for any visiting side. Jose Riveiro’s men must be professional and ruthless if they are to collect all three points and keep their season-ending momentum intact.
Bloemfontein’s Battle
Rounding out the round, Marumo Gallants welcome Stellenbosch FC to Dr Molemela Stadium. Stellenbosch have been one of the league’s more composed sides, built on structure and discipline under their coaching staff. Gallants at home, though, remain dangerous and will be desperate for points. It promises to be a tactical chess match with plenty at stake for both camps.
