Saturday’s Betway Premiership fixtures delivered a mixed bag of drama, upsets and grinding stalemates as the title race and relegation battle continued to take shape with just weeks remaining in the season.
Pirates Keep the Pressure On
Orlando Pirates were the standout side of the weekend, dispatching Orbit College FC 2-0 at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit. The Buccaneers were clinical and controlled, with Orbit offering little resistance against a Pirates outfit that continues to look every bit like genuine title contenders. The victory keeps Jose Riveiro’s men firmly in the conversation at the top of the table, and their consistency in recent weeks makes them a serious threat to any side with championship ambitions.
Chiefs Suffer Another Blow
Perhaps the most shocking result of the day came from Moses Mabhida Stadium, where Kaizer Chiefs fell to a 1-0 defeat against Chippa United. The Amakhosi, already battling to salvage a disappointing season, simply could not find a way through against a resolute Chippa side that punished them on the day. For a club of Chiefs’ stature, losing to a bottom-half side at what was effectively a home ground is a damaging result – both for morale and for any lingering ambitions of a top-two finish. The pressure on the coaching staff continues to mount.
Relegation Six-Pointer Goes to AmaZulu
Down at Chatsworth Stadium, AmaZulu claimed a vital three points in the relegation scrap, edging Durban City 1-0 in a tense local affair. For Usuthu, the win could prove to be a lifeline – every point in the bottom half of the table carries enormous weight at this stage of the season. Durban City, meanwhile, will be deeply concerned by their inability to find the net, as their goal tally continues to be a source of frustration in their fight for Premiership survival.
Magesi Continue to Impress
Magesi FC produced another composed performance at Seshego Stadium, seeing off Richards Bay 1-0 to strengthen their own position in the standings. The Limpopo-based side have punched above their weight for much of the campaign and this victory is further evidence that they are no pushover – a fact Richards Bay learned the hard way.
Stalemates Frustrate Both Ends
Three of Saturday’s seven fixtures ended in draws, with none of them particularly thrilling. Golden Arrows and TS Galaxy played out a goalless affair in Durban, while Marumo Gallants and Stellenbosch FC cancelled each other out in Bloemfontein. Stellenbosch, who have genuine top-four aspirations, will feel they left two points behind in that one.
At Peter Mokaba Stadium, Sekhukhune United and Siwelele served up the most entertaining draw of the day – a 2-2 thriller that had both sets of supporters on edge throughout. Neither side could hold on for a winner, leaving them to share the spoils in a match that had plenty of heart even if it ultimately satisfied no one.
As the Betway Premiership enters its final stretch, Saturday’s results have reshuffled the deck at both ends of the table. Pirates look ominous, Chiefs look troubled, and the relegation picture remains as murky as ever.
