Saturday the 23rd of May serves up a full slate of Betway Premiership action, with seven fixtures all kicking off simultaneously at 15:00. From the coastal buzz of Durban to the Limpopo highlands, there is plenty at stake as the season draws toward its conclusion. Here is everything you need to know ahead of a mouthwatering round of top-flight football.

    The Durban Derby That Counts

Three of Saturday’s seven clashes take place in and around the Harbour City, making it a genuine Durban Day for South African football fans. The most emotionally charged of the lot is the KwaZulu-Natal derby between Durban City and AmaZulu FC at the intimate Chatsworth Stadium. Usuthu have been inconsistent this term and will be desperate to finish the campaign with something to shout about. Durban City, still finding their footing in the top flight, will want to use home advantage to spring a surprise. Expect a physical, passionate encounter that means everything to the local community.

Just across the city at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium, Golden Arrows host TS Galaxy in a fixture that carries serious mid-table implications. Abafana Bes’thende have the backing of a loyal fanbase, and Galaxy will need to be organised and disciplined if they are to come away with anything from Durban.

    Chiefs Under the Spotlight

The fixture that will dominate the headlines is undoubtedly Kaizer Chiefs versus Chippa United at the magnificent Moses Mabhida Stadium. Amakhosi have endured a turbulent season under scrutiny, and with the Phefeni Glamour Boys fanbase growing increasingly restless, Saturday represents another chance to salvage some pride before the curtain falls. Chippa United, never an easy side to break down, will arrive in Durban with little to lose – which makes them dangerous. A large Chiefs contingent is expected at Moses Mabhida, and the atmosphere should be electric. How the Soweto giants respond to that pressure will tell us a great deal about the mentality in the camp.

Pirates Face a Test in Nelspruit

Orlando Pirates make the trip to Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, where they face Orbit College FC. The Buccaneers have been one of the more compelling sides in the Premiership this season, but the artificial pressure of expectation never goes away at Bucs. Orbit College will be fired up for the occasion, and Pirates cannot afford to switch off for even a moment against a side playing with nothing to lose.

Limpopo Rivalry and a Bloemfontein Battle

Up in Polokwane, two intriguing fixtures unfold at the same moment. Magesi FC host Richards Bay at Seshego Stadium, while Sekhukhune United take on Siwelele at Peter Mokaba Stadium in what promises to be a fiercely contested local showdown. Both matches carry survivability undertones, with points absolutely precious at this stage of the campaign.

Down in Bloemfontein, Marumo Gallants welcome Stellenbosch FC to Dr Molemela Stadium. Stellenbosch have been one of the more progressive clubs in recent seasons and will be keen to finish strongly, while Gallants will feed off home support to make life difficult.

All seven matches kick off at 15:00 on Saturday, 23 May. It promises to be a thrilling afternoon of Betway Premiership football right across the country.
